Thousands of gamers through the world suffer from motion sickness while playing video games. I remember the first time I recall getting sick while playing a game. It was sometime in 1996 and I was playing Shadows of the Empire on my Nintendo 64. When looking over some high cliffs in the game I started getting nauseas and hot. I thought the feelings would pass and did not even attribute it to the game at the time. After a break (maybe over night), I would give the game another shot. At first, all would seem well. Then I would get to an area similar to the cliffs and I would get sick again. I quickly came to realize it was the game that was making me sick.
Over the years, other games would make me sick. I will not name all of them but they are all of the 3D variety. My friends use to love playing Quake 3. I bought Quake 3 Arena the day it came out but never played it much as it made me sick very fast.
As time went on and I got less daring, I stopped buying most 3D games. From time to time, I would buy one and give it a shot thinking it might be different. I have done some research over the years to try and see if there was a remedy or a cure for video game induced motion sickness. Recently, I heard of ginger (the herb) and decided to give it a try.
I will not get into the Scientifics of ginger and motion sickness as I don’t know them and all I would be doing is citing other sources. However, I will quickly discuss my first hand knowledge.
A couple of weeks ago I went to the local apothecary and bought one hundred 500mg capsules of ginger for about ten dollars. I planned to test ginger with Left 4 Dead 2 for the Xbox 360. I play my games on a 60 inch Sony XBR2 in 1080i. My lighting varies but it is recommended you play in a dark room to help avoid motion sickness.
About twenty five minutes before I would start playing the game, I would take one ginger capsule. Then after I had been playing for twenty minutes or so I would take another one. A couple of times I started playing too soon after I took my first ginger pill and I got a little sick. However, the sickness was nowhere close to being as bad as it had been without any ginger. My initial method of taking a ginger pill before I started playing and then following it up with another one after I had been playing a few minutes seemed most effective for preventing my motion sickness.
Ginger has been very effective for me in preventing motion sickness. When taken both before and during play it prevented almost all of my motion sickness. I have actually enjoyed playing Left 4 Dead 2 a good bit online lately. I will continue to use ginger to allow me to game more since there are no known negative side effects to ginger and you can’t over dose on it.
I will update this min-review as needed.
